Why a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist?

Certified Sex Addiction Therapists (known as CSAT’s) are the ‘Gold Standard’ for assessing and treating porn and sex addiction. To earn full CSAT credentials, counsellors must be practising Masters Degree clinicians with at least 3 years of clinical practice.

They are then required to complete the CSAT certification process which is comprised of both academic and practical components. Therapists must complete studies at the International Institute of Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP) in the United States. The syllabus has been developed by Dr. Patrick Carnes, a pioneer in the field of sexual addiction research, and other members of the IITAP clinical board.

Following successful completion of academic studies, 30 supervised hours of porn/sex addiction counselling must be completed to become fully certified with the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP).

CSAT’s are highly trained trauma treatment specialists who help their clients work through issues that untrained clinicians may leave unaddressed. CSAT’s understand the underlying wounds, experiences, patterns, and trauma that can lead to porn and sex addiction and such individuals need an experienced and skilled counsellor who understands and can treat the underlying causes of the addictive behaviour.
